Just because the sun is out and it’s bbq season doesn’t mean you need to throw away your goals completely. Here are some tips and alternatives to the standard buckle busters.
BURGERS: For some reason this concept of leanness on ground beef/chicken/turkey gets lost in translation. Just because it’s ground turkey or chicken does not make it better than some lean or extra lean beef.
80% Ground Turkey
-240calories/20g fat/5g sat/14g pro
93% Ground Beef (4oz)
-140 calories/4.5g fat/2g sat fat/24g pro
BRATS: A solid bbq can’t be had without a brat for most. Nowadays there are so many alternatives to the pork fat combinations of bratwursts. Below are a few:

ADD VEGGIES: Some of the best vegetables ever made are on the grill! The heat brings out the natural sweetness in onions, corn, asparagus, and so many other veggies. Don’t skip them! Adding fiber for digestion, satiety, and taste is a missing piece in most bbq’s.
SEASONING NOT ALL SAUCES: Calling out one of the biggest names in the game here. My apologies Sweet Baby Ray’s but holy cow man 16g of sugar in 2tbsp. That amount of sugar will throw anyone off there total health goal for the day. Salt, pepper, paprika, Montreal Seasoning, there a bunch of packets, a dash of this and a dash of that brings out the natural flavor of the protein or dish itself. Most sauces take over the taste not enhance the taste like most spices and herbs. Try it!
BREADS: Wheat or white bread instead of something more natural like whole grain just taste better to most people at a bbq. Again

to taste the actual bbq with an enriched white vessel is preferred by most. Here are some high fiber and low carbohydrate alternatives to good ole bunny bread that won’t spike your glucose and throw all your numbers off. Be careful if you want to avoid gluten because these definitely contain wheat gluten. That’s why the protein & fiber are very high for “bread“ in these alternatives.
With all the alternatives and tips above go enjoy bbq season. Don't skip everything enjoyable about the season. Introduce these items to friends and family and if they like it or not it really doesn't matter. Let them have their regular stuff too. You never know, it may help them and introduce something they had no idea was out there and they may have similar goals!
